Fungus gnats are small flies found in damp, humid environments and are commonly seen near houseplants. They infest soil and feed on decaying organic matter and living materials, including root, root hairs, and stalk tissue, while also being capable of spreading detrimental mites, viruses, and fungal spores to plants. Even though adult fungus gnats live for about 10 days, they can lay up to 200 eggs during this time. Adults laid eggs hatch into larvae in 4-6 days. For 12-14 days, the larvae feed on the roots of plants and then molt. At the end of 12-14 days, the larvae pupate in the soil. The pupal stage may last 4-6 days. The whole life cycle is completed within 4-5 weeks.
